Therapies We Provide
Therapies for Mental Health Recovery
Prosper House provides a therapeutic service that all service users are required to attend. The aim of the different modalities of treatment that we provide are to defeat the patterns of complex mental health by addressing the underlying issues for the client and providing them with new healthy prosperous patterns of behaviours, habits as well as how they see themselves in the world and how to relate to themselves and others around them. Our approach is holistic, yet systematic for a long term recovery. Our therapies deal with the whole person, relational, spiritual, emotional, body image and health. We offer individual and group therapy.
Group Therapy
In a group setting we will help our clients understand their difficulties and alter their problematic behaviours. We support people with Mental Health and comorbid conditions, such as Anxiety, Depression, and low Self-Esteem. Second, we will practise and implement better coping strategies and work with the whole body involving both classic talking therapy and movement therapy. Throughout we will draw on the ideas established within CBT (-E), DBT, mindfulness, and body work. Group therapy will be offered twice weekly.
Individual Therapy
Every resident will have weekly personal sessions with our therapist in-house. Sessions will be fitted to every individual’s needs and goals in a unique way. Our therapist works integratively, which means that she will draw on different approaches to benefit the recovery of every client. You may read more about approaches we offer below.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy
The cognitive-behavioral model emphasizes the important role that both thoughts (cognitive) and actions (behavioral) can play in maintaining an eating disorder. Examples of maintaining factors include:
- Cognitive Factors ~ over-evaluation of weight and shape, negative body image, core beliefs about self-worth, negative self-evaluation, perfectionism
- Behavioral Factors ~ weight-control behaviors including dietary restraint, restriction, binge-eating, purging behaviors, self-harm, body checking and body avoidance
Individuals with eating disorders often hold a negative or distorted view of themselves and their bodies. These highly critical thoughts can result in feelings of shame, anxiety or disgust that often trigger weight control behaviors and fuel a cycle of negative self-evaluation. Guided by a therapist, CBT helps the individual to examine which specific factors are maintaining their disorder and to set personalised goals that are addressed throughout the various phases of CBT. Our therapist is furthermore trained in CBT-E a model exclusively designed for Eating Disorders (Fairburn et al. 2013)
Body Movement Psychotherapy
Challenges clients to identify and take action toward body acceptance through body desensitization. Our clients find this help them to challenge and replace dysfunctional thoughts and behaviours related to their bodies, food, and the displacement of emotional concerns onto appearance and body image. Our clients find these gentle groups provide relief from the mental energy and obsession they carry relating to their body image.
Nutrition Groups
We run a series of different nutrition groups each focusing on teaching clients intuitive eating skills, eliminating nutritional myths, and facilitating a new approach to achieving a balanced style of eating. Our nutrition groups are held by our nutritionists.
Mindfulness
Practicing mindfulness can help a person reflect on what they are feeling or experiencing and create greater awareness of thoughts, emotions, feeling, and behaviours.
Healthy Living Skills
These groups teach skills to include: stress management, personal boundary recognition, affect management, reconciliation of cognitive distortions, and positive relationship building.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical Behavior Therapy is used to treat a variety of different mental health conditions. DBT is a form of cognitive-behavioural therapy that helps people learn to change their behaviour. In DBT, you learn new skills and then have a chance to practice these skills.
DBT focuses on how to:
- practice mindfulness
- regulate emotion
- tolerate distress
- relate to others effectively
We ensure that our clients at Prosper House are valued and important, their wishes and feelings are heard and they have their personal freedom.
This encourages them to maximise their opportunities to live, life to the full and prosper.
